General
Background
The
northeastern Zhejiang area is part of the Yangtze River
Delta metropolitan region and is the province's economic
hub accounting for 64.8% of Zhejiang's GDP in 2001.
The
northeastern Zhejiang area covers 6 cities and counties
-- Hangzhou, Ningbo, Jiaxing, Huzhou, Shaoxing, Zhoushan.
Economic
Performance and Policy
- Fourth
largest economy among all provinces with GDP accounting
7.0% of China's total
- Fourth
largest industrial base with gross output value accounting
for 8.3% of China's total
-
Fourth largest exports base accounting for 8.6% of the
national total
-
Third largest market of consumer goods after Guandgong
and Jiangsu. Retail sales by wholesalers and retailers
(RMB 179.3 billion) accounted for 7.0% of China's total.
Zhejiang
is the fourth largest industrial production base in China
after Guangdong, Jiangsu and Shandong. In 2001, gross industrial
output by all state-owned and non-state owned enterprises
with output exceeding RMB5 million reached RMB788.2 billion,
an increase of 19.4%.
Industries
in the northeastern region are more developed than that
in the southwestern region. Major industrial production
bases are located at Hangzhou, Ningbo, Wenzhou, Jiaxing,
Huzhou, Shaoxing, Jinhua, Quzhou, Zhoushan, Taizhou and
Lishui.
Light
industries have long dominated the province's industrial
sector, accounting for 55.5% of gross industrial output
value. Zhejiang enjoys a competitive edge in China in the
manufacturing of garments, chemical fibers, leather, foodstuffs,
plastics, metal products, and paper.
Zhejiang's
output of a number of products, including canned food, beverage,
chemical fibres, silk, clothes, papers, cements, and some
machinery are ranked among the highest in the country. The
province produces over one-third of the country's total
output of silk.
The
Hangzhou Bay area is the most important IT industry base
of Zhejiang where 70% of the provinces's electronic enterprises,
80% IT product manufacturers and 90% software development
companies are housed. Almost all the microelectronics industry
and mobile-telecommunication industries are centralized
in this district.
Zhejiang
has a strong private sector. Production by the private sector
(non-state-owned and non-state-holding enterprises) accounted
for 84.2% of the province's total industrial output. Production
by private indigenous enterprises more than tripled since
1998 to account for 24% of the province's total in 2001.
Foreign
Trade
Foreign
trade grew significantly in the past five years -- exports
grew 21.1 times and imports grew 48.7 times between 1986
and 2001. In 2001, total imports and exports amounted to
US$32.8 billion, representing 40.2% of GDP. Mechanical and
electronics products are the main products concerned, accounting
for 39.8% and 31.6% respectively of the province's total
imports and exports.
Foreign
investment is one of the major driving forces behind Zhejiang's
foreign trade growth in recent years. In 2001, imports and
exports of foreign funded enterprises amounted to US$11.9
billion, accounting for 32% of the province's total trade.
The majority (79%) of Zhejiang's exports was ordinary trade
(not export processing). Major export items included garments
and textile, shoes, primary plastics, textile machinery,
seawater aquatic product and plastic articles. Major export
markets include the EU, Japan, Hong Kong and the US. Major
import sources included Taiwan, Japan, Korea, the US and
the EU.
Consumer
Market
Zhejiang's retail sales of consumer goods accounts for 7.9%
of China's total. Major consumer markets are located in
Hangzhou, Ningbo, Wenzhou, Shaoxing, Jinhua and Jiaxing.
Final
Word
A Few Things
You Probably Didn't Know About New Year's
Aa
raisin dropped in a glass of fresh champagne will bounce
up and down continuously from the bottom of the glass
to the top.
To
many Americans, the ball dropping at Times Square in New
York City signals the start of the new year in this country.
The ball was first dropped in 1908.
And
a final sobering thought - according to the Illinois Secretary
of State's office, the average cost of a first time DUI
conviction is $11,200. Compare that to a $20 cab ride.
Be
smart, be safe and live to enjoy the new year.
